WhatsApp Now Lets You Secure Chat Backups Using Passkeys

Secure Chat Backups Using Passkeys: WhatsApp is taking another big step toward a passwordless future. The messaging giant has announced the rollout of passkey-encrypted chat backups for iOS and Android, allowing users to protect their stored messages using biometric authentication or a device lock code instead of traditional passwords or encryption keys.

WhatsApp Introduces Passkey-Encrypted Backups

In an official announcement, WhatsApp confirmed that the new feature will begin rolling out gradually over the coming weeks and months. With this upgrade, users can now encrypt their chat backups with a simple tap, glance, or fingerprint scan — bringing backup protection on par with WhatsApp’s existing end-to-end encryption for chats and calls.

Previously, when WhatsApp introduced encrypted backups in 2021, users had to create a password or store a 64-digit encryption key to safeguard their chat data. This process, while secure, often felt cumbersome and carried the risk of users forgetting or losing their key.

Passkeys simplify this process significantly. They rely on biometric authentication systems such as Face ID, Touch ID, or Android screen locks to manage access — ensuring data remains secure while eliminating the need to remember complex passwords.

What Are Passkeys and How Do They Work?

Passkeys are a modern authentication method that replaces traditional passwords with device-based verification. Instead of typing a password, users can authenticate themselves using the built-in security systems of their smartphone, tablet, or computer.

This technology leverages cryptographic keys stored securely on the device. Only a private key (kept on your device) and a public key (stored on WhatsApp’s servers) interact during authentication, making it almost impossible for hackers to intercept or steal credentials.

WhatsApp first adopted passkey logins in 2023, allowing users to sign into their accounts securely without typing a password. Now, the company is extending that same convenience and security to chat backups, signaling its commitment to a fully passwordless ecosystem.

Why This Matters for Users

For millions of WhatsApp users who rely on chat backups to store photos, messages, and memories, this update offers a much smoother and safer experience.

“Many of us carry years of precious memories in our WhatsApp chats – photos, heartfelt voice notes, and important conversations,” the company explained in its announcement. “That’s why protecting them if you ever lose your phone or need to transfer to a new device is so important.”

This new system means users no longer need to:

  • Remember or store a 64-digit encryption key.
  • Worry about losing access to chat history when changing devices.
  • Compromise between convenience and privacy.

Instead, security is now tied directly to your biometric identity or device authentication, ensuring your backups remain private even if your phone is stolen or accessed by others.

Gradual Rollout and Availability

According to WhatsApp, the passkey-encrypted backup feature will be rolled out in stages worldwide across both Android and iOS devices. While the update may not be visible to all users immediately, most will receive it in the coming weeks and months through automatic app updates.

This expansion also comes as WhatsApp continues to enhance its overall security framework, following recent updates like passkey login support, encrypted media backups, and improved two-step verification.

WhatsApp’s Passwordless Future

With this move, WhatsApp is embracing the broader industry shift toward passwordless authentication, championed by major tech players like Google, Apple, and Microsoft.

By making both account access and chat backups compatible with passkeys, the Meta-owned platform is reducing dependency on traditional passwords — which are often the weakest link in digital security.

In the near future, we can expect WhatsApp to integrate passkeys more deeply across its ecosystem, potentially extending them to multi-device login, cloud syncing, and even business account management.

Final Thoughts

The introduction of passkey-encrypted backups represents a major leap in WhatsApp’s ongoing mission to balance user privacy, security, and simplicity.

With backups now protected using the same effortless authentication methods that secure chats and calls, users can enjoy peace of mind knowing their memories — from personal moments to professional messages — are better protected than ever before.

As the rollout continues, WhatsApp’s vision of a truly passwordless messaging experience is quickly becoming a reality.
