Some iPhone 17 Pro Units in Cosmic Orange Are Mysteriously Turning Pink — Here’s Why

Posted on October 25, 2025October 25, 2025 By Kumar Sumit No Comments on Some iPhone 17 Pro Units in Cosmic Orange Are Mysteriously Turning Pink — Here’s Why

iPhone 17 Pro: A growing number of iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max users are voicing concerns about an unusual issue affecting the Cosmic Orange color variant. Reports across social media platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) reveal that several users have noticed their devices gradually turning pink, sparking discussions about a potential material or chemical reaction issue.

The Issue: Cosmic Orange Turning Pink

Apple introduced the Cosmic Orange finish as the flagship color for the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, emphasizing its anodised aluminium frame for a sleek and durable look. However, this anodised coating process—while visually striking—can be susceptible to chemical reactions. Over time, exposure to certain substances may alter the color of the metal, which seems to be what is happening in this case.

Expert Insights: Why the Color Change Happens

According to Tom’s Guide, referencing insights from Mark Jazefowicz, VP of Technical Services at PF Finishing (as cited by TechRadar), anodised aluminium can experience discoloration when exposed to hydrogen peroxide—a chemical commonly found in disinfectants, skincare products, and household cleaners. When hydrogen peroxide interacts with anodised metal, it can damage the sealed dye layer responsible for the device’s original color, leading to a pinkish or faded hue.

This aligns with many user observations: the discoloration often appears around edges and corners, particularly where the phone comes into frequent contact with skin oils or cleaning agents.

Apple’s Official Cleaning Guidelines

Interestingly, Apple’s official support documentation already warns users against using cleaning products that contain bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Instead, the company recommends gentle cleaning solutions:

“You may gently wipe the hard, non-porous surfaces of your Apple product — such as the display, keyboard or exterior surfaces — using a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, 75-percent ethyl alcohol wipe, or disinfectant wipe,” the company advises.
“Do not use products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Avoid getting moisture in any openings and do not submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents.”

These instructions suggest that the discoloration may not be a manufacturing flaw but rather a chemical reaction caused by improper cleaning or exposure to reactive substances.

No Official Response Yet

As of now, Apple has not released an official statement acknowledging the issue. However, the company is likely monitoring the situation as reports continue to surface online. Historically, Apple has investigated similar cosmetic issues before providing guidance or solutions, so affected users may receive more clarity in the coming weeks.

Preventive Measures for Users

For those who own the Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro, experts recommend the following precautions:

  • Avoid hydrogen peroxide-based products near the phone.
  • Follow Apple’s official cleaning guidelines strictly.
  • Use a protective case to minimize direct contact with skin oils and environmental chemicals.
  • Avoid frequent cleaning with strong chemicals — a soft, dry microfiber cloth is often sufficient.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone 17 Pro remains one of the most advanced smartphones Apple has ever produced, but this unexpected pink discoloration has raised questions about the durability of its premium finishes. While the issue may be cosmetic rather than functional, users who chose Cosmic Orange for its standout aesthetic are understandably disappointed.

Until Apple provides an official explanation, the safest course of action is to adhere to recommended cleaning practices and handle the device with care to maintain its original vibrant color.
