Instagram Tests Algorithm Tuning Feature for Personalised Recommendations

Posted on October 30, 2025October 30, 2025 By Kumar Sumit No Comments on Instagram Tests Algorithm Tuning Feature for Personalised Recommendations

Instagram Tests Algorithm Tuning Feature: Instagram has started testing a new feature that allows users to personalise their algorithm-based recommendations by selecting or removing topics of interest. Announced by Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri on Threads, this update gives users more influence over their Reels feed and will later extend to the Explore page. The initiative is part of Meta’s broader push for transparency and customisation, following previous updates that allowed users to restrict sensitive content and refine suggested posts.

Introducing the ‘Tune Your Algorithm’ Feature

The new feature, known internally as “Tune Your Algorithm,” introduces a dedicated section called Your Algorithm within Instagram’s Settings. Here, users can view and manage the topics influencing their recommendations. The section displays a list of interest areas based on users’ engagement habits—examples from Mosseri’s own account include Luxury Watches, Fashion Week, Bad Bunny, Stand-up Comedy, and Concerts.

From this dashboard, users can add new topics they want to see more of or remove existing ones they find less relevant. This offers a more direct and transparent way to adjust Instagram’s recommendation system, aligning it closer to individual preferences.

Limited Rollout and Initial Focus on Reels

Instagram is currently testing the algorithm tuning feature with a small group of users. Initially, it applies only to Reels, the short-form video section of the app, where personalised recommendations play a major role. Test participants can fine-tune their Reels experience by selecting preferred content themes or limiting specific categories they’re not interested in.

Mosseri confirmed that the feature will later expand to the Explore tab, allowing broader control over the posts and videos users encounter across the platform. This incremental rollout will help Instagram gather valuable feedback before a global launch.

A Step Toward Greater User Control

This experiment builds on Instagram’s ongoing efforts to provide more control and customisation tools. In recent years, the platform has introduced parental controls, sensitive content filters, and content restriction options. With algorithm tuning, Instagram takes another step toward empowering users to shape their digital environment.

Future Expansion Beyond Instagram

Mosseri also mentioned that the algorithm tuning concept could be extended to Threads, Meta’s text-based platform, in the future. However, no timeline or testing details have been shared yet. Instagram aims to refine the system based on user feedback before expanding the feature more widely.

Conclusion

Instagram’s new algorithm tuning feature represents a significant step toward personalised and transparent recommendation systems. By letting users directly influence the content they see, Instagram is bridging the gap between algorithmic efficiency and user autonomy.
