Google Chrome Gets Material 3 Expressive Redesign on Android with Chrome 141 Update

Google Chrome Gets Material 3 : Google is giving its Chrome browser on Android a fresh new look with the rollout of the Material 3 Expressive UI. The redesign, now available with Google Chrome version 141, is being gradually rolled out through a server-side update. The update aligns Chrome’s design with other Google apps that have already adopted the Material 3 Expressive language, such as Google Keep, Gmail, and Messages.

A Modern Visual Overhaul

According to reports from 9to5Google, the latest update introduces a subtle yet meaningful visual refresh to Chrome’s interface. The redesigned layout focuses on improved accessibility, modernized icons, and smoother transitions while maintaining a compact design.

The three-dot menu in Chrome has been restructured for clarity and ease of use. Key options like Forward, Download, Bookmark, Site Info, and Refresh now appear at the top inside rounded circular containers, reflecting Google’s new design philosophy.

Interestingly, when a user visits a bookmarked page, the star icon changes from its standard circular design to a rounded square, adding a visual cue to indicate bookmarked sites.

Enhanced Tab Grid and Navigation

Chrome 141 also updates the Tab Grid view with a cleaner, more colorful layout. The ‘New Tab’ (+) button now appears as a rounded square featuring Dynamic Colour theming, adapting to the user’s wallpaper or system theme.

The tabs, Incognito mode, and Tab Groups now use a rounded square container with improved contrast and visibility. Tab Groups are also now highlighted in the selected theme colour, providing a more cohesive and organized experience.

These visual tweaks make it easier for users to distinguish between different browsing modes and open tabs, while maintaining Chrome’s lightweight, responsive feel.

Redesigned Address Bar and Omnibox

Another highlight of the Material 3 Expressive update is the revamped address bar (Omnibox). Some devices now show a segmented progress indicator with rounded corners as pages load — a small but noticeable change that enhances visual feedback during navigation.

However, this updated Omnibox design is still rolling out gradually and may not be visible to all users yet.

Compact Layout and Familiar Feel

Unlike other Google apps that have adopted Material 3, Chrome’s new interface remains compact, avoiding larger buttons or extra spacing. This ensures that the browser still feels familiar and efficient, especially for one-handed use on mobile devices.

This design balance—modern visuals without compromising usability—makes Chrome’s new look a subtle but polished update rather than a complete overhaul.

Continuing Google’s Design Evolution

The Material 3 Expressive redesign is part of Google’s broader effort to standardize the look and feel across its ecosystem. The update follows similar visual refreshes seen in Google Messages, Gmail, Calendar, and Home, each adopting smoother edges, dynamic colour theming, and cleaner iconography.

For now, Chrome version 141 with the Material 3 Expressive design is rolling out in stages. Users who haven’t received it yet should keep an eye out for automatic updates through the Google Play Store in the coming weeks.

With this rollout, Google continues to refine its Android experience — blending form and function — and keeping Chrome one step ahead in both performance and visual appeal.
