Air Pockets: Apple Scraps Production as $999 Slim-Phone Experiment Fails to Fly

Apple’s latest experiment in smartphone design isn’t going as planned. According to reports, the company is drastically cutting production of the iPhone Air, one of its major launches this year, after the device failed to generate strong demand in the market.

iPhone Air: From Star Launch to Sales Slump

The iPhone Air, launched in September 2025 at $999, was marketed as Apple’s thinnest and lightest iPhone ever. Measuring just 5.6mm thick, it carried a sleek titanium frame, a 48-megapixel main camera (similar to the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro), and offered up to 40 hours of battery life when paired with Apple’s optional $99 MagSafe battery pack.

Despite the futuristic design and premium materials, the phone hasn’t impressed buyers. Many consumers reportedly found its single rear camera and shorter battery life underwhelming — especially when compared to the larger and more powerful iPhone 17 and Pro models.

Production Cuts Hit Hard

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Apple has now slashed iPhone Air production to nearly “end of production” levels. While overall manufacturing for the iPhone 17 lineup remains steady at 85–90 million units, the iPhone Air’s contribution is shrinking fast.

Sources told The Verge that starting November, iPhone Air production orders will fall to less than 10% of what they were in September. In other words, Apple is almost pulling the plug on its sleek but struggling model.

Apple Shifts Focus to Stronger Sellers

Initially, the iPhone Air was expected to make up 10–15% of total iPhone 17 production. But with sales lagging, Apple is now diverting resources toward models that are performing better. Production for the base iPhone 17 has reportedly increased by 5 million units, while Pro and Pro Max models are seeing an additional boost.

This shift reflects what market data already shows — the iPhone 17 series is performing better overall. Analysts at Counterpoint Research revealed that in the first 10 days of launch, sales of the iPhone 17 lineup were 14% higher than the iPhone 16 series in key markets like the US and China.

Global Demand Tells a Different Story

Interestingly, the weak demand for the iPhone Air seems to be mostly outside of China. The phone’s China launch is only set for October 22, meaning sluggish early sales are coming from other regions. Analysts believe consumers in North America and Europe simply didn’t see enough value in the Air’s ultra-thin design to justify its premium price tag.

A survey by KeyBanc Capital Markets painted a stark picture: demand for the iPhone Air was described as “virtually zero.” The report also noted that consumer excitement around foldable phones remains limited, suggesting that futuristic designs alone aren’t enough to win buyers over.

Consumers Still Love the Classics

While the iPhone Air struggles, Apple’s more traditional designs continue to shine. Demand remains strong for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, thanks to their powerful processors, advanced cameras, and long battery life.

KeyBanc analysts added that despite Apple’s frequent mentions of AI features during product launches and marketing campaigns, these haven’t yet made a big impact on buying decisions. For now, consumers still seem to prioritize camera quality, battery life, and durability — areas where the Air appears to fall short.

A Familiar Pattern for Smartphone Makers

Apple isn’t the first company to face this kind of setback. The iPhone Air’s poor performance mirrors that of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge, which also underperformed earlier this year. Samsung reportedly sold just 1.31 million units of the S25 Edge by August, forcing the company to halt production and cancel the model altogether.

Both cases underline a key trend: while tech companies chase slimmer and sleeker designs, most customers prefer practical features over flashy form factors. The market clearly favors phones that last longer and deliver better everyday performance, even if they’re a bit thicker or heavier.

What’s Next for Apple?

Industry watchers believe Apple will now double down on what’s working — the iPhone 17 Pro lineup — and possibly reconsider its approach to “Air”-branded devices. The company has a history of adjusting quickly to market feedback, but the iPhone Air’s early decline shows how tough it can be to balance innovation with practicality.

For Apple fans, the iPhone Air was supposed to be a glimpse of the future — thin, light, and stylish. Instead, it’s become a reminder that design alone can’t guarantee success.

As one analyst put it, “Consumers love innovation, but not at the cost of performance.” And for Apple, that may be the clearest message yet as it plans its next big move in the ever-competitive smartphone market.
