WhatsApp Testing Username-Based Search and Calling for iPhone Users: Here’s What’s Changing

Posted on November 15, 2025 By Ujjwal Kumar No Comments on WhatsApp Testing Username-Based Search and Calling for iPhone Users: Here’s What’s Changing

WhatsApp has started testing a new update for iPhone users, and this one can make things a little easier. In the latest iOS beta, the app is working on a username-based search and calling system. This means you may soon identify people without always depending on phone numbers. For now, the idea looks simple — make unknown chats safer and give users a clearer hint about who is reaching out. Along with this, searching for someone may also become smoother, especially when you don’t want to share your number immediately. It’s a small change, but it feels helpful.

What’s new in this update

Till now, when you get a chat or call from an unknown number, you only see digits on the screen. But with this update, WhatsApp may show the username of that person instead of just the number. Along with this, their profile photo might also appear if their privacy settings allow it. This will make it easier to understand who is trying to contact you, especially when you get random calls or new requests.

Why this can help

Unknown notifications confuse a lot of users. With username-based search, things can become a bit safer and clearer. You can look for someone using their username, and your own number stays hidden during the search. It adds a small layer of privacy and helps you decide quickly whether to reply, accept the call, or just ignore it.

When you may get this username-based search

This feature is still in the testing stage, so only a few beta users can see it right now. It may take some time before it reaches all users. WhatsApp usually improves things during testing, so the final version might look slightly different. For now, if you’re on the iOS beta, you can look out for a new username tag when someone new tries to contact you through username-based search. Overall, the update looks like a simple but useful step to make chats safer and more comfortable for iPhone users.
