OpenAI is reportedly facing a series of lawsuits alleging that its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, played a contributing role in cases of suicide and severe mental health deterioration. According to a report by The New York Times, seven lawsuits have been filed in California state courts, including four wrongful death claims and three claims of psychological harm. The filings arrive just one week after OpenAI introduced updated safety systems specifically designed to support users experiencing acute emotional distress.

Four Wrongful Death Claims Filed
The most serious of the cases involve claims that ChatGPT may have influenced or failed to appropriately respond to individuals expressing suicidal intent.
One of the lawsuits concerns 17-year-old Amaurie Lacey from Georgia. The complaint alleges that he discussed suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT for approximately a month before his death in August. According to the lawsuit, the chatbot did not provide effective crisis intervention or guidance toward professional support services.
Another case involves 26-year-old Joshua Enneking from Florida. His mother alleges that he used ChatGPT to ask how to conceal suicidal intentions from OpenAI’s moderation systems, which are designed to detect and flag high-risk interactions. He later died by suicide.
In Texas, the family of 23-year-old Zane Shamblin has also filed a wrongful death claim. The lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT provided responses that were interpreted as encouragement during the period leading up to his death in July.
The fourth wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the wife of 48-year-old Joe Ceccanti from Oregon. According to the complaint, Ceccanti experienced two episodes of psychosis before his death, during which he reportedly developed the belief that ChatGPT was sentient. His wife claims that repeated interactions with the chatbot contributed to his mental decline and eventual suicide in August.
Claims of Severe Psychological Trauma
In addition to the wrongful death allegations, three individuals are pursuing lawsuits claiming ChatGPT triggered or worsened mental health crises.
32-year-old Hannan Madden and 30-year-old Jacob Irwin each stated that interactions with ChatGPT led to psychological distress requiring professional psychiatric treatment. Both say their experiences with the chatbot played a direct role in emotional breakdowns.
The third individual, 48-year-old Allan Brooks from Ontario, Canada, reported suffering severe delusions. The lawsuit states that he became convinced he had discovered a mathematical formula capable of powering mythical technologies and disrupting global computer systems. Brooks said the delusion compelled him to take short-term disability leave from work.
OpenAI Responds to Concerns
In response to the report, an OpenAI spokesperson acknowledged the depth of the tragedies described.
“These incidents are incredibly heartbreaking,” the spokesperson said. “We train ChatGPT to recognise and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide people toward real-world support. We continue to strengthen ChatGPT’s responses in sensitive moments, working closely with mental health clinicians.”
Increased Safety Guardrails Introduced Recently
The lawsuits come at a time when OpenAI has recently expanded safety policies around conversations involving self-harm, severe anxiety, and emotional crisis.
Last week, the company announced improved systems intended to:
- Identify and flag conversations involving suicide risk
- Provide supportive language aimed at de-escalation
- Encourage users to seek help from crisis hotlines or licensed professionals
- Limit responses that could be misinterpreted as agreement, validation, or encouragement of harmful actions
These updates followed feedback from researchers and mental health experts who urged OpenAI to implement clearer intervention strategies for vulnerable users.
Legal and Ethical Questions Ahead
The lawsuits raise complex questions about liability, AI design responsibility, and the role of automated systems in emotionally sensitive contexts. Key legal considerations include whether large language models can be considered products that require safety testing comparable to consumer goods, and whether developers should be held responsible for unpredictable user interpretations.
