Instagram Finally Rolls Out ‘Watch History’ for Reels — Here’s How It Works

Watch History’ for Reels: Instagram is finally giving users what they’ve been asking for — a way to see and revisit Reels they’ve already watched. The Meta-owned platform has begun rolling out the new Watch History feature for Reels, a long-awaited update that functions much like YouTube’s watch history.

This new addition aims to make it easier for users to rediscover engaging short videos they may have liked or watched in passing but forgot to save or share.

Instagram Finally Rolls Out ‘Watch History’ for Reels

What Is the Reels Watch History Feature?

Instagram Head Adam Mosseri officially announced the rollout on Threads, Meta’s text-based social platform. According to his post, the Reels Watch History can now be found in the app’s settings under the Profile tab.

To access it, users simply need to:

  1. Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner of their Instagram profile.
  2. Go to Settings → Your Activity → Watch History.
  3. The feature is located under the “How you use Instagram” section.

Once inside, users can browse through all the Reels they’ve viewed recently, helping them track down videos they want to rewatch, save, or share.

How It Works: Sorting and Filtering Options

Instagram’s Watch History isn’t just a simple list — it comes with advanced filtering and sorting options to make finding specific Reels quick and easy.

By default, users will see Reels watched in the past 30 days. However, they can manually remove any Reel from the history if they prefer to keep their watch activity private.

Mosseri explained that there are three main tabs for navigating through the Watch History:

  1. Sort by Date:
    • Users can choose to display Reels from newest to oldest or oldest to newest.
    • This makes it simple to find videos from a particular timeframe.
  2. Filter by Date Range:
    • The Watch History offers several time-based filters including Past Week, Past Month, or All Dates.
    • For even more control, users can select a custom date range — perfect for finding a Reel they remember watching during a specific period.
  3. Filter by Author:
    • Perhaps the most exciting option, this feature allows users to search for Reels shared by a specific creator or account.
    • If you remember who posted the Reel but not when you watched it, this filter makes it much easier to find.

These filters combined make Instagram’s Watch History feature far more dynamic than similar tools found on competing platforms.

Why This Feature Matters

Until now, Instagram users had no official way to track which Reels they had viewed unless they manually liked, saved, or shared them. This often made it frustrating to relocate interesting videos, especially as the app’s algorithm constantly refreshes the feed with new content.

The introduction of Watch History solves that problem and gives users more control over their viewing experience. It also encourages longer engagement by allowing people to rewatch or rediscover content they’ve previously enjoyed.

Moreover, the added ability to filter by author and date range gives users flexibility that YouTube’s version of Watch History doesn’t currently match — an interesting move that could set Instagram apart in terms of content management.

Privacy and Control

Instagram has also made sure users retain full control over their activity history. You can delete specific Reels from your Watch History at any time, ensuring privacy for those who don’t want their viewing habits stored indefinitely.

While the feature is primarily designed for convenience, Meta’s inclusion of user control options reflects the company’s ongoing effort to offer more transparency and customization within the app.

Availability

As of now, the Reels Watch History feature is gradually rolling out and may not yet be visible to everyone. Instagram typically releases new updates in phases, so users who don’t see the option yet should check back over the next few weeks as the rollout expands globally.

This update comes as part of Instagram’s broader strategy to make the app more user-friendly and engaging, especially for Reels — the platform’s fastest-growing content format.

Final Thoughts

Instagram’s Watch History for Reels is one of the most practical and user-requested updates in recent months. Whether you’re a casual scroller or someone who uses Reels for inspiration, tutorials, or entertainment, this new feature makes the app more navigable and intuitive.

With powerful filters, easy access, and complete privacy control, Instagram is finally giving users the tools they need to take charge of their Reels experience — and ensure they never lose track of a great video again.
